More Remembrance Day

Good Evening!

I played around with my Poppy ideas, and came up with the following packet of activities I can use this year and in future years while recognizing Remembrance Day in my classroom. I started out just looking to find ways to review the numbers 11-20 with my class, as that is our current unit in math, but I kept on going until there were 16 different pages to choose from, some of which are too hard for my first graders this year, but which I may be able to use in future years.

I'm now hoping to come up with a few centre activities to plan for that last day of school before the holiday, but we'll see if I can come up with something shareable.

Here are a few images from the packet (just click on any image to go to TPT to buy your own):

Remembrance Day

It's almost bedtime for me, so I don't have time to properly write up this product, but I wanted to share my first official Emergent Reader on TPT! With Remembrance Day coming up right on the heels of Halloween, I wanted to create or find a product that will fill my students needs. Since we're working very hard at recognizing numbers and their words, I hope this will help.

Hopefully someone else out there can also make use of it!

Just click on the image to go to the TPT product page.

Thanks!

Counting

As part of number concepts, I'm trying to help some students be able to count past seven , and others to have a grasp of the difference between the numbers, while others are just having trouble reading the number words, so we're doing a ton of different activities trying to get everyone up to date.

This week one activity had the kiddos using our blocks to make sticks representing the numbers from 1-15 (because that's how many would fit on our large paper).

I tried of course to divide my groups so there would be kiddos of various abilities in each group, but still two groups finished really fast, and so I had them help the other groups. One group however, continued to do their own thing and tried to make ALL of their sticks all blue, lol. I know they thought it was cool, but the activity could have taken HALF the time if they'd paid no attention to colour.

Ten little Heroes

My classroom theme is Superheros this year, and so while teaching numbers this week, I decided a great way to review/learn counting up and down to ten (we have to be able to do it to twenty) would be to sing a numbers song.

The one I learned as a student in grade school is now wildly inappropriate/insensitive, especially in a Northern Community like where I've put down roots, but the tune we all grew up with is still a great resource.

And so, Ten little Heroes was born!

I drew hero masks on all my kiddos fingers and taught them the finger play.

Ten little Heroes

One little, two little, three little heroes,
four little, five little, six little heroes,
seven little, eight little, nine little heroes,
ten little heroes in the room.

Ten little, nine little, eight little heroes,
seven little, six little, five little heroes,
four little, three little, two little heroes,
One little Hero saves the day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This weekend is Thanksgiving up here in Canada, and so in true teacher tradition, I had my class create a Thanksgiving craft to bring home. I didn`t want to make the standard (yet extremely cute) hand-print turkeys that they made in Kindergarten, but I still wanted something cute. My conundrum was born. After a few days of searching and taking stock of the art supplies available to me, I came up with our crazy Turkeys (or Silly Turkey`s to be more politically correct.

I gave each student a sheet of orange construction paper which I had drawn a circle on in the middle lower third. Each student then glued pre-measured and cut strips of ribbon to the paper, ensuring each piece touched the circle. I had left my sample in two pieces so they could see how they were supposed to touch.

After gluing their "feathers" to the paper, they took my body template and traced and cut it out before gluing over the circle on the orange construction paper.

I gave each student two googly eyes, in different colours and different sizes, as well as small pieces of orange and red paper for the beak and gobbler.

It was so easy, and a big hit. I hope you enjoy it as well if you choose this craft for your Thanksgiving celebrations next October (or this November for my American followers).

Happy Birthday to me!

This week marked my 34th birthday, and so to celebrate, I brought in cupcakes to share with my class. I wish I had done this with my past classes, but this was great. It was also a great bribe, because all day they could see them on the shelf and wanted to know when we were going to eat them, lol.

A few activities this month...

I'm being a bad blogger, but I'm just going to do a photo dump this week. Next week I'll try to resume my weekly features and start sharing resources I've created for my classroom. Please don't hate me!

Here's my daughter passed out on my classroom floor when she came in to "help" me clean my classroom this weekend.

September 30th our school recognized (because celebrate is not a good word for this occasion) the first annual Wear Orange Day. Next year I'll be better prepared with an actual orange shirt ( I own NOTHING orange, lol), but my kids and I made do with orange hearts on our hands and cheeks. Orange Shirt Day recognizes the survivors and victims of the Indian Residential Schools.
The Same week we celebrated Cultural day, so for a craft we made these cute little Teepees, which made a cute little village. Too bad my camera died and I didn't get a picture of the whole village.

We have now studied 6 sight words (we're going very slowly to increase the chances my lower learners learn them), so on Friday we played Sight word concentration.

We've made several different fall trees to celebrate the new season. These ones are glue first for texture, then paint.

We made these Pirate glyphs from teachwithme when the Purple Pirate visited.

We finished our patterns unit in math, so I made our outside bulletin board into a brag board. It's bordered with our patterned friendship chain, the bottom features  our pattern flowers, and above that is our pattern border we created as a class (pumpkin, heart, tree)

This is actually from early in the year. Each student glued popcorn kernels to a glue letter of their initial.

This will be a product I share soon. We are studying Family in Social Studies, and so made these adorable family trees.

These are our seasons apple trees we created for our first art project.

These are our torn paper Fall leaf trees. I had a  lot of fun making my sample..
